Learn the full technique on one ornament first. Then use it to create the rest of your Christmas collection, with three finishing styles to explore.
You find a beautiful sheet of Christmas rice paper. You can already picture it on your ornament.
Then you apply the glue. A bubble appears. Or the paper wrinkles. Or the colours look completely different against the wood.
You try to smooth it out. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it makes the situation worse.
It's frustrating to waste materials on a project you were excited to make.
You don't need another isolated trick. You need to see the whole process.
That means understanding what happens before the paper touches the wood, as well as what you do afterwards.
Glue matters. So do the background colour, preparation of the wood, amount of adhesive and way the paper is smoothed.
Applying delicate paper is a practical skill. Seeing each movement and repeating the steps can help you improve.
You don't need to learn every surface and technique. Start with one wooden ornament and a process you can use again.
At The Secrets of Decoupage, we work with rice paper and create decorative projects on different surfaces.
Customers also ask us about the things that go wrong: bubbles, wrinkles, surface preparation and finishing.
That's why we're preparing a complete demonstration of one festive project, with Agnieszka showing the work from the first preparation steps to the finished ornament.
You'll see the important brush movements, not just a finished photo.
You'll be able to pause and replay the lesson as you work, once the course is available.
Choose the materials, prepare the wooden blank, and check the colour of the background before gluing.
Position your motif, add adhesive carefully and practise smoothing without damaging the delicate paper.
Allow suitable drying time, check the surface, then add a protective and decorative finish.
Rice paper is often partially transparent. A darker background can make a printed motif look different once it's attached.
Before decorating a full piece, hold a small piece of rice paper against a light background and then a dark one.
Notice how the colours change. For many designs, a properly prepared light surface helps keep the artwork looking bright and clear.
No special purchase is needed for this simple comparison. It's one example of the practical decisions the course will explain.
A premium, step-by-step video course built from Agnieszka's real studio recordings, with close-up camera work and English voice-over. Planned running time: about 135 minutes across six modules, plus a bonus troubleshooting lesson.
The wooden blanks, rice paper, adhesives, paints, brushes and finishes you'll use, and what to check before you begin.
Cleaning, sanding and priming the plywood, and choosing a background colour that keeps your motif bright.
Positioning the motif, controlling the adhesive and smoothing delicate paper to limit bubbles, wrinkles and tears.
The first of three finishing styles, demonstrated from base layers to the protective coat.
A second finishing style, with ageing and distressing techniques used with purpose rather than by accident.
The third finishing style, then fitting centres and frames, adding ribbons and completing your six-ornament collection.
How to spot trouble early, what may be fixable, and when to leave the work to dry.
The lessons are being filmed and edited now. Running times are planned and may change slightly in the final edit. All lessons open on 1 December 2026 at 9:00 UK time.

There is nothing wrong with learning by trial and error.
But if you want to see each step, understand the materials and practise the process with a real festive project, you can choose a clearer path from bare wood to beautiful ornament.
Learn it on one decoration. Then put the same techniques to work on five more.
